Program/Class descriptions

 Required courses

Master Class (violin/viola/cello)

Each student will have lessons with two or three other students.  Each will have 15-20 minutes of individual instruction with a master teacher each day, and will also observe the other students in the same class as they learn.

Play-in class (late book 1 and above)

Students will have the opportunity to play and learn with students at different levels for fun.  Adults are also welcome to participate.

Group class

By playing and learning in groups of their peers at their own level, students will develop musicality and increase their motivation and inspiration.

Orchestra

Students who are able to read music may automatically participate in this large string ensemble.

Elective courses
(each student will have 1 or 2 electives during the workshop)

Japanese Arts

Students have opportunity to explore Japanese arts, such as Calligraphy, Origami, Folk Tales, Conversation, and Cooking

Creative movement (5-8 years old)

We will use basic movements and experiment with music, mood, dynamics, speed, color, and character.  Emphasis will be placed on imagination, individual expression, body awareness, relationship to space and others, and, of course, fun!

Stretch and Strengthen: Introduction to Pilates (9 years and older)

We will use different kinds of exercises, movements, and props to build strength while having fun and stimulating both the mind and the body.  Elements will include timed activities, improvisation, safe contact, and pilates-style stretching

Music Mind Games

Music Mind Games is a curriculum of more than 200 cooperative games for teaching music theory and reading developed by Michiko Yurko.  Students learn sophisticated concepts involving rhythm, dictation, note reading, and sight singing in the form of imaginative games.  Creative materials take the place of pencil and paper, and games are played on the floor with parents, teacher, and friends.  Some games are used to teach concepts and others are for developing the memory, but all are played in a relaxed, child-friendly manner. For more information, visit www.musicmindgames.com.

Improvisation

This class will explore different styles of improvisation (jazz, pop, Latin) for students of violin, viola, and cello.  Participants will be placed in a class with students of comparable playing level.  We will notify those students who will be in each class by the end of May so that participants will be able to purchase the appropriate book before the workshop.

Level I: (End of book I through the mid book 2).  "Suzuki Jam": Improvise on jazzy arrangements of Suzuki repertoire tunes

Level II: (Late Bk. 2 through early Bk. 4). Learn to improvise using Jody Harmon’s Improvise method

Level III:  (Bk. 4 & above).  Jazz class using Jazz Improvisation Made Easy by John Blake & Jody Harmon.

Chamber Music

Students who are in late Book 2 and above and are also able to read music are welcome to participate in chamber ensembles.  We will send music a few weeks before the workshop to those who elect to play in chamber groups.
