UVMC Suzuki School
Required
Courses
Each
student will have a master class lesson with two
or three other students. Each lesson will be 15-20 minutes of
individual
instruction with the master teacher, and students will also observe the
other
students in the same class as they learn.
Students
will have the opportunity to
play and learn with students at different levels for fun. Adults
are also
welcome to participate.
By playing
and learning in groups of
their peers at their own level, students will develop musicality and
increase
their motivation and inspiration.
Students
who are able to read music will
participate in one of two levels of orchestra. Elective courses (each
student will have 1 or 2 electives during the
workshop)
Students
have opportunity to explore
Japanese arts, such as Calligraphy, Origami, Folk Tales, Conversation,
and Crafts.
We will
use basic movements and
experiment with music, mood, dynamics, speed, color, and
character.
Emphasis will be placed on imagination, individual expression, body
awareness,
relationship to space and others, and, of course, fun!
Ever wonder how
dances are made? Learn how!
Music Mind
Games is a curriculum of
more than 200 cooperative games for teaching music theory and reading
developed
by Michiko Yurko. Students learn sophisticated concepts involving
rhythm,
dictation, note reading, and sight singing in the form of imaginative
games. Creative materials take the place of pencil and paper, and
games
are played on the floor with parents, teacher, and friends. Some
games
are used to teach concepts and others are for developing the memory,
but all
are played in a relaxed, child-friendly manner. For more information,
visit www.musicmindgames.com.
This class
will explore different
styles of improvisation (jazz, pop, Latin) for students of violin,
viola,
and cello. Participants will be placed in a class with students
of
comparable playing level. The
following method books will be available for optional purchase at the
workshop. Level II: (Late Bk.
2 through early Bk. 4). Learn to improvise
using Jody Harmon’s Improvise Method Level III:
(Bk. 4 & above). Jazz class
using Jazz Improvisation Made Easy by John Blake &
Jody
Harmon.
Students
who are in late Book 2 and
above and are also able to read music are welcome to participate in
chamber
ensembles. Chamber repetoire will be handed out with the
Orientation materials.
